What is Cold Drawn Process?

Seamless Pipe Manufacturers use what is known as the Cold Drawn Process or Cold Drawing Process, also called Drawn on Mandrel (DOM), to manufacture seamless pipes and tubes.

Let us get to know what the Cold Drawn Process is all about.

• The raw materials used for this process are hot rod coils or rolled steel bars which tend to vary in size and selection. But before these are used, iron oxide on the surface of the stock is removed. Then it is coated with a lubricant to smoothen the cold drawing process.

• Further, the bar or coil ends are cut down by several inches. It is done to ensure that the dying procedure, which follows immediately, occurs effortlessly.
  
• Now comes the actual cold drawn process. It is known as Cold Drawn because the action takes place at the room temperature.
  
• The reduced segment of the coil/bar is passed through the dye, where the drawing machine shapes the product and increases its length.
  
• The resultant product is called Cold Finished or Cold Drawn. It displays bright color and a polished finish.
   
• Multiple-Pass Drawing Process:Sometimes, the complex profile and shape of the coil/bar may require it to be subjected to the drawing procedure on several occasions. It is done to get the desired tolerance and shape of the end product.

The Cold Drawn Process is used to manufacture seamless pipes because the finished products have numerous desired qualities.

• They have substantially improved tolerances.
• They exhibit the required tensile strength.
• They have good machinability and increased hardness as well as concentricity.
